"Lady Meng Jiang Weeps Down The Great Wall"

Lady Meng Jiang and Wan Xiliang (wan means “ten thousand”) were very newly wed when the Emperor Qin conscripted the young man in the construction of the Great Wall. Without any word of her husband for months, Lady Meng Jiang missed him immensely and dreamt of Wan one winter night. He was calling to her, cold in his threadbare clothes. The next day, Lady Meng Jiang set out to bring him warm garments. When she reached the Wall however, she learned that he had passed away. Lady Meng Jiang wailed against the wall, the weight of her grief bringing the wall to collapse, revealing Wan’s bones. In her profound and unbounded sorrow, she threw herself into the sea.

Chinese ceramics were exported not only by land via the Silk Road, but also by vessel on sea, to places as remote as the Americas but also as proximal as Japan, where Chinese techniques were quickly adopted in the local craft. Japan is where we encounter the legend of Utsuro-bune — the “hollow boat”: 

In 1803, fishermen on the eastern coast find a strange ship, washed ashore. A foreign woman is on board, with fire hair and a pale complexion, wearing fine clothes of unfamiliar make. She does not speak Japanese, and clutches a mysterious box. In fear (of the unknown, of the other), the fishermen return the woman and her boat to sea, to drift away.

She is inscrutable to them, and therefore (a vessel) empty.

The Danaïdes were the fifty daughters of Danaos. They were promised to the fifty sons of Aegyptus, but Danoas did not favour the marriages. He presented each daughter with a dagger, with an order to kill her bridegroom on the wedding night; all but one obeyed. The forty-nine daughters who acceded were condemned to spend eternity in the underworld, filling a basin by sieve. Their punishment transcribes as perpetual failure to hold -- their invalidity in performing their task as women, as vessel.
